-For the Salisbury Steak:
- - 1 pound ground beef
- - 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- - 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- - 1 egg
- - 2 tablespoons ketchup
- - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- - Salt and pepper to taste
- - 1 tablespoon olive oil
- - 1 cup beef broth
- - 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
- - 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms optional
-For the Mashed Potatoes:
- - 2 pounds potatoes peeled and quartered
- - 1/2 cup milk
- - 1/4 cup butter
- - Salt and pepper to taste
For the Salisbury Steak:
In a bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Shape into 4 oval patties.
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, add beef broth and bring to a simmer. If using, add sliced mushrooms.
Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Remove patties. Stir cornstarch mixture into the skillet to thicken the gravy. Return patties to the skillet and coat with the gravy.
For the Mashed Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 20 minutes.
Drain and return potatoes to the pot.
Add milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth.
