Materials

-For the Salisbury Steak:

  • - 1 pound ground beef
  • - 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • - 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • - 1 egg
  • - 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • - Salt and pepper to taste
  • - 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • - 1 cup beef broth
  • - 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • - 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms optional

-For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • - 2 pounds potatoes peeled and quartered
  • - 1/2 cup milk
  • - 1/4 cup butter
  • - Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add beef broth and bring to a simmer. If using, add sliced mushrooms.
  • Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove patties. Stir cornstarch mixture into the skillet to thicken the gravy. Return patties to the skillet and coat with the gravy.

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 20 minutes.
  • Drain and return potatoes to the pot.
  • Add milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth.
